We live in a world where it seems that we are all connected. Anytime. Anywhere.

Gone are the days of workplace communication via static ridden walkie talkies and malfunctioning intercom systems.  Today we have smartphones, laptops, tablets and camera systems.

Yet, it still happens.  There is an emergency within your workplace and no one can be reached.

Most people have left for the day.

The numbers on the work cell phones are out of date.

The sign near the phone with important numbers has had coffee spilled on it (a few times).

The one person who’s number you do have isn’t picking up.

Example of an emergency telephone sign.

Don’t wait until this happens to you.

1. Make sure all phone lists are easily accessible and up to date. You should also have your office’s phone number and address ready and near main phones in case an employee has to recite it to a 911 operator.

2. Make sure the numbers saved in cell phones are current and accurately labelled.

3. Make sure walkie talkies are charged and distributed (if you still use them).

4.  Have a designated employee phone tree and practice using it every so often (rather than waiting until a real emergency).

5. Make sure  all important numbers and addresses are up to date and listed in your employees Health and Safety Handbooks (you do have one?).
